William Shatner tweeted NASA on Saturday, and he received a reply. This is not the first time Shatner has poked at NASA or one of their astronauts on Twitter. The actor has fully embraced both Twitter and Facebook. Web Pro News reported on Shatner’s latest exchange on August 3.
Shatner tweeted NASA with “How is NASA doing today?” NASA would not take the time to respond to that question from a normal person, but William Shatner is definitely not a normal person. In recent years, the actor has become an unofficial spokesperson for the organization. In 2011, the actor sent a “Star Trek” like wake up to the astronauts on a Discovery mission. The next year, Shatner taped another message the resident of the International Space Station. He also narrated a video about the Curiosity Rover.
NASA decided to respond to his question via Twitter with an update on the International Space Station. Their tweet said the following:
“@WilliamShatner Good day, Captain. #ISS is in standard orbit and Commander Swanson has the conn. Hope you’re having a great weekend!”
Shatner replied to the tweet with “Very good news.” This is not the first Twitter exchange between Shatner and a member of NASA. Back in 2013, Shatner shared an exchange with Chris Hadfield, who is the first Canadian space commander. Shatner wanted to know if Hadfield was tweeting live from space. Hadfield responded with the following:
“@WilliamShatner Yes, Standard Orbit, Captain. And we’re detecting signs of life on the surface.”
William Shatner may have only played a captain on “Star Trek,” but Captain James T. Kirk is one of the best-known characters in film and television. He has shown his support for NASA, and the organization honored him with an award. He received the Distinguished Public Service medal from NASA earlier this year.
Shatner has jumped in completely when it comes to social media, and this means he is able to share his opinion on social media as well. Recently, he expressed his dislike of a new Facebook app. He wrote an entire blog post about Mentions, which is an app that focuses on celebrities. The actor called the app “ill-conceived” on his new Tumblr blog. He started the blog just a few weeks ago.
The actor also attended Comic Con this year, but his appearance stirred up more than the usual amount of interest because of how he arrived at the event. Shatner was in a wheel chair when he made his way on stage. The actor joined Betty White and Donald Faison for the Legends of TV Land panel during the event. The 83-year-old actor revealed he was injured during a horse riding accident. He said the following to the people attending the panel to see him:
“I was riding a horse and had an accident. The horse got off scot-free. I did not. I wrecked my leg. I was not going to Miss Comic-Con. In a couple of days I’ll be fine, but right now I’m in a lot of pain.”
It is clear that William Shatner is not a normal 83-year-old. He is active, embraces new technology, and he is not afraid to share his opinion when he has something he wants to say. It has been a long time since he was last seen as James T. Kirk, but he is still well loved by many.
