UPDATED ON 7/11 TO ADD: Secret Agent 23 Skiddoo will be making six FREE NYC appearances next week! Get details, here, and read on to find out how being a weird kid can win you many fabulous prizes!
In NYC, over half of the children tested rack up IQ scores above the 90th percentile (see: What Qualifies a Child as Gifted in NYC). As a result, it’s pretty average to be above average in New York City (not unlike in Lake Woebegone).
However, gifted is much more than a score or a percentile. (Despite the fact that a score or percentile is the only criteria used for placement in a gifted public school program; even though the creator of the test strictly warned against it).
Regardless of the number connected to their name, gifted children often develop obscure and obsessive interests in subjects others might have never given even minimal thought to. This can have the result of said children being labeled “weird” by their peers (and even by some parents, including their own).
But, who says “weird” has to be a bad thing? Weird can win you prizes! (Beyond Nobel, Pulitzer, Academy Award and Olympic Gold.)
The award-winning “Kid Hop” band, Secret Agent 23 Skidoo, has gone ahead and declared 2014 “The Year of the Weird.”
They’ll be performing as part of NYC’s world-famous SummerStage Festival from July 13 – 18, 2014, they have a video to compliment their latest album, “The Perfect Quirk” (out on June 24); a book, “Weirdo Calhoun and the Odd Men Out” that comes with a CD to sing (and read) along to (out on September 23); and, most importantly for those who march to the beat of a different drummer (or maybe even a whole new instrument), a contest to celebrate being weird!
To enter the contest, kids should visit Secret Agent 23 Skidoo’s website, where free downloads of the song “Imaginary Friend” from “The Perfect Quirk” and the Hip Hop Audio Version of “Weirdo Calhoun and the Odd Men Out” are available, along with instrumental versions for both.
After listening, kids are invited to create a destiny for the character Pickles in “Imaginary Friend” or for Weirdo Calhoun. (What’s the connection here? Seems “weird” comes from the Old English word “wyrd,” which means “fate” or “destiny.” If you live with a four foot tall person who finds that kind of information infinitely fascinating, then this is definitely the contest for you!)
Says Secret Agent 23 Skidoo, “What happens after the song? You decide! you can write a story, draw a picture and explain it, or download the instrumental version of either song and make a song of your own. Heck, make a full length movie if you want!”
Finished creations should be emailed to Secret Agent 23 Skidoo at: firstname.lastname@example.org by September 23.
Skidoo will choose two winners: one of the best Pickles destiny and one for the best Weirdo Calhoun destiny. Each winner will receive a Golden Ticket, which guarantees lifetime FREE entry for the winner and his or her family to any Secret Agent 23 Skidoo show ever (presumably, the winner should even be able to eventually bring their grandchildren. Now that’s a bargain!).
So what are you waiting for? Ready… Set… Weird!
Looking for more books that come with their own musical score you can sing along to while reading? “The Worldwide Dessert Contest: Enhanced Multimedia Edition” by Dan Elish is a middle-grade fantasy of very weird proportions. A weird inventor creates weird things that turn into other, even weirder things. Like pancakes into trampolines, exploding candy apples and even roller-skating pies. Get a FREE preview, here.
