Welcome to year four of Wrestler of the Week. Much like the previous three years this will continue to be a little way to highlight an individual (or tag team as the case may be) that had a particularly banner week in terms of storyline or on-air achievement. Just like in previous years, in addition to highlighting a Wrestler of Week, two honorable mentions will also be noted. Throughout the year point totals will be tallied. Just like in year three, each week 10 points will go to the actual Wrestler of the Week, 5 points going to the first Honorable Mention and 3 going to the second Honorable Mention. At the end of the year a Wrestler of the Year will be crowned.
Wrestler of the Week
Goldust & Stardust
The brother tandem opened last night’s WWE Night of Champions pay per view by defeating fellow brother tandem Jimmy & Jey Uso to win the WWE Tag Team Championships for a second time. Goldust, in particular, has had a career resurgence in the past year and with Cody Rhodes’ transition into the oddball Stardust character the brothers have found a new lease and purpose on life.
The luchadore defeated Ultimo Guerrero in a 2-out-of-3 Falls Match on September 19 at CMLL’s 81st Anniversary Show. The match was particularly special as it was a Mask versus Mask match, which is sacred in Mexican wrestling. Those wager type matches are more popular and prestigious than Championship matches. Atlantis was won seventeen of these wager matches over his career, which is a huge undertaking. The match main evented one of CMLL’s biggest shows ever, drawing over $1 million.
Also last night at The Night of Champions, AJ Lee defeated Nikki Bella and then-Divas Champion Paige to win the WWE Divas Championship for a third time. AJ’s first reign as Divas Champion was the longest reign in WWE history and now in her third reign she continues to build her legacy.
This week was loaded with big winners and here are some more wrestlers that should be recognized, but won’t earn any points for their accomplishments.
The Miz…Last night at The Night of Champions, Miz pinned Dolph Ziggler to win his fourth WWE Intercontinental Championship
