According to a Sept. 29 report from WrestlingInc.com, the results are in from the WWE Monday Night Raw spectacular that emanated from Chicago’s Allstate Arena on the evening of Sept. 29. Chicago native CM Punk was not on hand for the event, but the crowd witnessed a surprise that was just as shocking, when John Cena was demolished by Kane, Randy Orton and Seth Rollins in the Monday Night Raw main event.
Cena, the most popular babyface on the WWE roster, had teamed with Dean Ambrose for a bout against Kane and Randy Orton, when Rollins intervened. Rollins beat up on Ambrose, before finishing him off with a curb stomp through his Money in the Bank briefcase. Rollins then turned his attention to Cena. He bruised and battered the former WWE champ with punches, before sending him to an early shower with a brutal curb stomp into the suitcase.
Even more surprising was the fact that Rollins received a babyface reaction from the crowd, after he performed his signature curb-stomp finishing move on Cena. The Chicago crowd shockingly broke into a chant of “Thank you, Rollins,” shortly after the former Shield member pulverized Cena into bits. Typically, such chants are reserved for athletes who are on their road to retirement.
The last time WWE Universe broke into a “thank you” chant was when The Undertaker competed at Wrestlemania 30, in what was possibly his last match ever. The WWE can’t be happy with the reaction Rollins received, as their creative team went through extensive lengths to make sure he’s viewed as a heel character. The last thing they want is for Rollins to be receiving babyface reactions.
What will Rollins’ surprise reaction mean for his future? In all likelihood, his surprise cheers will result in the WWE scripting him to do something extra sinister at a future house show. When Brock Lesnar started receiving babyface reactions from the crowd, they scripted him to disrupt Hulk Hogan’s surprise birthday party. Perhaps the WWE could script Rollins to pummel a defenseless underdog, such as El Torito or Hornswoggle.
That would surely generate some heat for Rollins. The surprise reaction from the crowd on hand for Monday Night Raw also says something about Cena’s character. It’s clear by now that many WWE fans are sick of Cena always being featured in the main event and taking attention away from young up-and-coming superstars. Perhaps the time is right to script Cena to make a heel turn, as fans have been waiting patiently for it to happen.
