Sometimes lightning does strike twice. At BottleRock Napa Valley 2013, I got to get up close and personal with one of my favorite bands of all time, X. They played a blistering set in the blazing sun in front of a tightly packed and exuberant crowd. Here we are, a little more than a year later, and the opportunity to see them perform again, this time at City Winery Napa, has come about and there’s no way I’m going to miss this show.
On Saturday, July 26, 2014 all the original members of X will take the stage at City Winery Napa for what is sure to be an absolutely amazing show. There’s simply no way it could be otherwise. How am I so certain? That’s what happens when one of the most influential punk rock bands gets on stage and plugs into one of the nicest sound systems ever made.
X’s first two studio albums were ranked among the 500 greatest albums of all time by Rolling Stone Magazine and their album Los Angeles was ranked 91st on Pitchfork’s Top 100 Albums of the 1980s. The band has received an Official Certificate of Recognition from the City of Los Angeles in acknowledgment of its contribution to Los Angeles music and culture. Thirty years of being awesome will do that for you.
The band’s early albums, Los Angeles, Wild Gift, and Under the Big Black Sun examined the darker side of life, love, and Los Angeles and were raw punk rock treasures to be sure. With each ensuing album, More Fun in the New World and Ain’t Love Grand, the music got bigger, thicker and chunkier but never wavered from its gritty roots. Exene Cervenka, John Doe, Billy Zoom, and DJ Bonebrake together as X are not to be missed.
Whether you are lifelong fan or a curious newby, the opportunity to see this music legend at one of the nicest venues you’ll ever visit should not be passed up. Tickets to see X are on sale now and range from $45 to $55 and can be purchased through the City Winery Napa website by clicking here. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 8. City Winery Napa at the Historic Napa Valley Opera House is located at 1030 Main Street, right in the middle of downtown Napa.
