Were you one of the Apple iPhone 6 fanatics in line yesterday to get one of the first “best smartphones ever”? To bring you the line inside scoop, we followed the three-day adventure and 48-hour wait of YouTube Personality iJustine and her sister Jenna Ezarik. This tech power team was first in line for the iPhone 6 Plus, and you can watch it all here on our VIDEO: YouTube Star iJustine gets 1st iPhone 6 Plus at Apple Third Street Promenade.
Day 1 – Wed, September 17 – We first ran into iJustine and Jenna parked proudly outside the Apple Third Street Promenade store with their pink school bus tents. They got in line at 9:30 a.m. PST, and there were only about 10 people with them at around 7 p.m. PST. Justine explained their plan was to take showers at a nearby gym, which worked fine, except when they had to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
Day 2 – Thurs, September 18 – On the second night, iJustine and Jenna had a lot more friends in line with them, and were eating basil pizza for dinner. The Santa Monica Police had also put up metal barricades to manage the crowd better, and there were probably 150 now in line.
Many were anxious about whether they would get an iPhone 6 Plus (which was by far the phone of choice.) Some of the Santa Monica College students in line told me they had been offered $500 for their place in line. Another guy said, “Give me a grand, and I’ll give up my spot.”
The iPhone 6 fanatics in line told us that Apple would give out numbers starting at 5 a.m. PST and open doors at 8 a.m. PST. We decided to get up early, and capture it all for you.
Day 3 – Friday, September 19 – When we arrived around 7 a.m. PST, most of the line was standing up, and iJustine and Jenna were right in front with their pink school bus tents. While Jenna’s iPhone 6 Plus pre-order was being delivered to her home that day, she waited with her sister (talk about loyalty!) And even after not really sleeping for two days, they were still really pumped up on Day 3. When we interviewed them, they cheered in front of the store:
iJustine, “It’s been fun. We’re confirmed that they do have phones for both of us.”
Jenna, “Our job here is done.”
iJustine, “Achievement unlocked.”
Jenna, “First in line.”
Other people in line were not so confident. Abi Escobar (Santa Monica College student) told me, “It seems that even after waiting for 18 hours, it’s still uncertain if we’re going to get an IPhone….It’s so strange we are not getting a pass that’s letting us for sure get an iPhone, but they say since we’re top 100 people, we should be able no matter what to get a phone.” (I found out later that day that Apple planned to give out passes on Saturday morning to people in line to guarantee phones based on the store’s supply.)
When the doors finally opened at 8 a.m. PST, Apple store employees gave the official countdown (although watch our video because it sounded like they got a few numbers mixed up, probably sleep deprivation?).
iJustine and Jenna led the charge with many high-fives and jumps, while the Apple employees stood in the center of the store in their royal blue shirts cheering, “iPhone 6, iPhone 6, iPhone 6.”
We watched iJustine activate her iPhone 6 Plus phone (all on our video), which included another countdown, more cheers and high-fives. While there was a slight delay (and I mean seconds), it was exciting to see this 3-day adventure have a happy ending.
Our iPhone 6 Plus won’t arrive until mid-October that we purchased on Apple.com (which turned out to be a very smart move because many carriers such as T-Mobile and AT&T are delaying orders for weeks and even months due to high demand).
We’ll be ready with our Incipio NGP “Flexible Impact-Resistant Case” that arrived on this historic iPhone 6 launch day. While talking to many loyal fans in the line, I recommended that they get an Incipio case because they are known for durability and style. Honestly, I have dropped my iPhone 4S at least 100+ times. When most people hear it drop, they twitch and look at me with a sad face. And then I always say, “don’t worry, I have an Incipio case.” (This may sound like an ad, but how can you not love a case that saves your iPhone 100+ times?)
I’m also looking forward to getting the Incipio StowAway Advance Case that has a stand to make it easier to watch video and movies. The back opens, and you can store up to 3 credit cards, cash or an ID inside.
Congratulations iJustine and Jenna on your new iPhone 6 Plus phones, and good luck to everyone else who is on their own adventure to get an iPhone 6. If you did pre-order from Apple, you can still go to the store and try to get a phone. All you will need to do is cancel the first order (after you have a new one secured :).
